FAQ
I do not live in Manitoba; can I work with you?
Yes, you can. You must register in your province of origin and work with
an agency in your province that can complete your home study. We act as
a facilitator in the foreign jurisdiction you wish to adopt from. CAFAC
will work closely with your agency in all aspects of the adoption process.
What is the process to adopt through your agency?
The process begins by requesting the introductory package. Within this package
is all the paperwork you will need to register with our agency and begin
the adoption journey.
What does it cost?
CAFAC has 2 levels to its fees: agency fees and country fees. Agency fees are regulated by the Province of Manitoba. Country fees are what it costs our agency to complete work on your behalf in the foreign jurisdiction. All country fees are different depending on your adoption country of choice.
How many children have you placed through your agency?
Over 450 children have been placed through our agency and many of these
children and families have continued contact with our agency through post
placement reports, annual BBQ weekend, support groups, seminar parent panel
etc.
How long will the adoption process take?
The process varies for the country you have chosen to adopt from and there
are many variables in the process. Our introductory package details some
timelines and this is updated on a frequent basis, as it changes every few
months.
Can we be guaranteed a placement of a child by your agency?
No agency can guarantee the placement of a child, however we will advocate for your family if it is in the best interest of a child.
Am I too old to adopt?
Human rights legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of age. Anyone
may make application to adopt. The difficulty for an agency or foreign jurisdiction
is whether your life expectancy is such that you are unlikely to live long
enough to raise a child to adulthood. That is why you will find many countries
already have age restrictions on applicants.
Is there a chance I may not get approved to adopt?
The application and approval process is intended to secure a safe and appropriate
placement for a child. If our agency or a foreign country is not satisfied
you could provide this environment, then yes you could be turned down. However,
in having said that, if you have approval provincially and agency approval
but the foreign jurisdiction does not approve you, we can and will advocate
for your family in country if we feel you will be successful.
Why all the paperwork?
All licensed adoption agencies have legal and moral duties to families,
provinces and countries to secure a safe and appropriate placement and environment
for a child. Yes, the screening process is law, but ultimately our agency has to advocate for a child and what is in the best interest of a child.
Which countries do you work with?
We are licensed in Ethiopia and have accreditation to act as facilitators
in other foreign jurisdictions: China, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Haiti,
Russia, Jamaica to name a few.
Can we adopt a relative and what might be involved?
Often a sponsorship is a more viable option than adoption but every case
is different. You are more than welcome to call and share your story and
we can advise what might work best for your family.
